In ancient Chinese mythology, the ruler Shen-nong tasted plants to investigate their efficacy and taught this to others.
Thus Shen-nong is worshipped as a god of medicine. In Japan also, statues of Shen-nong ( Shinno in Japanese) can be seen enshrined in the houses and stores of long-established medical practitioners and pharmacies.
